Aerofex Inc., a California corporation, aims to launch the world’s first hoverbike by 2017 for a whopping $85,000. The Aero-X is a personal hovercraft that resembles a motorcycle in the air. For a refundable deposit of $5,000, Aerofex is now taking preorders and will reserve a hoverbike for its projected release in 2017.

In 2012, Aerofex released a concept of the hoverbike that was a lot bigger that it has been trying to improve. The new Aero-X set for release is to have a sleeker look that is smaller and more compact. Replacing the wheels of the previous version with rotor fans allows the bike to function without the use of runways or forward speed. The framing of the new hoverbike consists of carbon-fiber which keeps its weight light at only 785 pounds.

How Does it Work?

The vehicle is 14.8 feet long, 6.8 feet wide and 4.1 feet tall. According to Aerofex, the Aero-X hoverbike will seat two at a maximum carrying capacity of 310 pounds. The hoverbike is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings at an altitude of 12 feet and can  reach speeds of up to 45 mph.

With its three cylinder engine powered by a regular gasoline tank, hoverbike users can enjoy 85 minutes of riding per tank. In addition, because hovercrafts are generally difficult to maneuver and control, Aerofex has developed and patented technology that makes it easier for users to control the hoverbike without too much skill.

Aerofex claims the new technology makes the hoverbike as easy to ride as an ordinary motorcycle. Users will use its handlebar grips to control and maneuver the bike. The company states that a “weekend of training” will be sufficient time to learn how to fly the hoverbike.

In addition, because the maximum altitude of the hoverbike is only 12 feet, the FAA classifies it as an “aerial ATV” which does not require a pilots license.
